The Met Club is gearing up for its most important event of the year, the
106th Metropolitan Ball, which
will be held at the Yale Club on Friday, May
9, starting at 7 pm.
New York Congressman Peter King will
be the Guest of Honor, while our great
former Councilman, Andrew Eristoff, will be
the recipient of this year’s Roy M.
Goodman award.
This is our Club’s major fundraiser
and crucial to the success of the
organization.
Tickets, which start at just $250,
include a full evening of dinner and
dancing, plus an open bar all night.
We believe that this price is very
competitive with events of this type, while
still enabling us to meet our important
financial goals.
Invitations to the Ball are being
mailed out this week, but feel free to call
the Club at 212-288-8606 during business
hours to RSVP.
We very much hope to see you on
May 9!
While
the Met Ball is principal focus this month,
we have a number of events of interest in
the near future.
For example, the final 2008
installment of the Club’s popular Great
Decisions foreign policy seminar, will be
held on Sunday, April 6 at 3 pm in the
Clubhouse.
This week’s topic is
Private Philanthropy.
Billionaire Warren Buffet's June
2007 pledge to the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation prompted headlines about the size
of the gift and the impact it could have on
global education and health initiatives. Can
private donors be more effective than governments in
tackling world problems?
On Wednesday, April 9 we will be
screening “The World Without
America
”, which is making its
U.S.
premier.
This documentary by Joseph Goldman
and Yakov Svirski is about anti-Americanism
and about what would happen to the world if
the dreams of
America
's enemies come true. The movie points out
that if
America
were to disappear from the planet, humanity
would suffer terrible losses in culture,
science, medicine, economics and most
importantly, politics. Indeed, a world
suddenly bereft of
America
would probably beg to have it back after a
short time.
Screening time is 7 pm, and the event
is free and open to members and nonmembers.
Those interested in running for office or in running a campaign will be
interested in the
School
of
Applied Politics
sponsored by the NY
Republican
County
Committee and the Met Club.
The seminar will be held at the
Clubhouse on Saturday April 26 from 10 am to
3 pm. Topics
that will be covered in the program include
Campaign Plan and Staff Organization, Ballot
Access & Designating Petitions,
Fundraising, and Message Development &
Strategic Media Workshop.
The seminar is free and open to
members and nonmembers, but please RSVP at
212-288-8606 or during business hours or to
mail@metclubnyc.org.
One of our board members, Neal D’Alessio,
is sponsoring a series of Real Estate
continuing education courses on Monday April
14, 21, 28 and May 5, 12, and 19th.
These courses, which are held at the
Vincci Avalon Hotel (not the Clubhouse),
afford important opportunities for
professional development as well as CLE
credits, and are very reasonably priced.
Please contact Neal directly at nealdalessio@aol.com or call (203) 984-1118 if
interested.
Our Club will be starting off May well with
a First Thursday, our Club’s informal
social, on May 1 from 6:30 to 9.
Just $10 for members ($15 for
nonmembers) includes all refreshments.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not
acknowledge and thank the many people who
helped with our club’s highly successful
St. Patty’s Day party on March 13.
The festivities attracted at least
131 guests, the largest turnout for an event
in years.
We had great music, and tremendous
food, including Nick Viest’s very highly
acclaimed corned beef.
Among the people who played very
important roles in the event’s success
(and this is just a partial list) were
Debbie Leible, Georgiana Viest, Randie
Rosen, Marguerite Kissane, Mark Critides,
James Moore, Georgia Palmieri, and the
world’s best bartender, Frank Fazzari.
Thanks so much to everyone for their
help!
